                Press View: Tuesday 8 June 10.00 – 13.00

The exhibition will be inaugurated by The Mayor Councillor, Brenda Kirby
and Consort of Croydon at 19.00, 8 June 04.

'Protection v Deforestation' is a solo exhibition showcasing photographic
images by photographer Maeve Tomlinson.  She joined The Sherwood
Forest Tree Protesters, closely following the world of those who actively seek
to preserve our natural surroundings on a day-to-day basis.  The protesters
have been on site at Mansfield Woodhouse since 1st September
2003 to stop further deforestation of over 40 trees and raise public awareness.

Maeve’s colourful images were taken from the heights of a 60-foot Beech tree
on site.  It encapsulates the living atmosphere of ancient trees, thrown together
objects and passionate people where everything meshes into one through their
common desire to protect the woodlands
from destruction and private ownership. She risks the 60 feet climb to capture
these images of beauty coupled with chaos created in a desperate attempt
to rescue.  Maeve revisits the site throughout the autumn, winter and spring months.

The exhibition includes a video night depicting Eco-Warrior’s direct actions taking
place around the country. There will also be card readings based on the
Egyptian Tree of Life  by Karimah.  Booklets will be provided by Croydon Council
called ‘Guide to Green Living in Croydon’ with information on how to make a
contribution with regard to environmental awareness in the area.

Maeve Tomlinson is a young artist who works with ideas and issues that, at times, place her
in a political arena; she is able to meet her challenges with sensitivity and conviction.
She works as the Photographic Editor of an innovative, up and coming lifestyle magazine,
                emel for British Muslims. She has exhibited at Café de Paris, Leicester Square;
The London Institute and the Fairfield Halls, Croydon.

All proceeds from photographic sales go to www.RoadAlert.org.uk and the  Campaign to Save the Trees

'Protection v Deforestation' is curated by Bula C Agbo, Gallery Director and Biggi Stiller,
                Exhibition Assistant, Pepperton Gallery.
